Using unassailable logic and rigorous scientific investigation, this man proves that the Earth is indeed flat, contrary to all of the “old” science that indicates otherwise.

D Marble, as he is known, took a spirit level on a plane and proved beyond any doubt that even though the airplane is allegedly traversing a curved surface, the bubble in the level never moves, despite the fact that the nose of the airplane must be dipping in order to fly around the globe.

I recorded a 23 minute and 45 seconds time-lapse, which by those measurements means the plane travelled a little over 203 miles.

According to curvature math given to explain the globe model, this should have resulted in the compensation of 5 miles of curvature. As you’ll see there was no measurable compensation for curvature.

And there you have it. Apparently, Mr. Marble (ironic name, no?) didn’t fly far enough to have sailed off the edge of the world into space. That would have been even better proof.

Jesus. I just visited his YouTube channel. What an idiot.

Now, nevermind him... how is it that people can still not belive the earth is round in 2017.

Saw this over the weekend and my wife thought this was a joke…we spent a good hour delving in to the world of this crazy conspiracy theory so she could see that there were actual people who believe this shit. Best part is their belief that pretty much all space travel, all the satellites out in orbit right now…pretty much everything clearly indicating that the world is indeed spherical and we have proof to show it, it’s all a combined global scam to keep up an old lie from the space race. Damn, with collaboration like that world peace would’ve been achieved decades ago!

Oh and also, you may wonder- why haven’t one of these jackasses just travelled to the end of the world if it’s flat, to report back to us what’s beyond it? Because Antarctica is the border of the entire flat earth, and it is government controlled to prevent anyone from getting beyond its perimeter. Of course that’s the reason…nothing to do with the fact that they’re a bunch of lazy nutjobs who know they’d prove themselves wrong if they actually tried.

I know it’s a fool’s errand to introduce logic here, but do these people ever try to come to terms with the fact that you could fly to Japan via either the Atlantic or Pacific?

For my next experminent, Im going to take this spirit level, attach a camera to it, and a length of line and spin it around in a circle to show that the level is always pointing down, since it would have to be to validate my point. Here we Go!...

Somebody needs to reproduce the same results doing the same experiment for it to be science. Maybe one the astronauts can bring a level with them to the space station to see if they notice any corrections for the curvature when they are circling the Earth.

You may laugh at this guy’s scientific method, but his experimental design is perfect for getting funded through an NIH study section. Specifically, you design an experiment to provide an outcome that supports your hypothesis, and voila!, preliminary data that gets you funded.

I was just laughing last night that I live in a world where you have to show all your work, and it’s peer reviewed by people who are pretty good at smelling something fishy, but in the end reviewers take you at your word that you did things ethically and aren’t falsifying things. This contrasts with the world of car buying where you don’t trust anything someone tells you unless you can independently verify it (I’m doing that now with pre-sale inspections).

I know people who have had to retract stuff that someone in their lab outright fabricated, and it’s a disaster. More often though, I see people who bias their experiments toward what they want the outcome to be. I collaborated with one guy in particular who did that kind of stuff. He and I got into a very tense situation where I wouldn’t let our paper be published until I’d duplicated some experiments his lab had done enough times to be reliable. It catches up to you eventually though. People read your stuff and build on your work, and if they can’t duplicate and observe what you did, you get a reputation and egg on your face, even if you can’t be shown to have outright lied. Karma eventually catches up to you.

Still, scientists are humans, and they love a good story. Building a scientific career these days is almost as much about marketing and salesmanship as it is about good science. And I hate that.

When I finished my doctorate, I applied for college teaching jobs. I got three final-round interviews, but no hires. Interestingly (not really), all three of my interviews were at schools where I had some sort of personal connection with a current faculty member (never burn your bridges). In the end, I’m glad I never got the job, because I ended up with a performing gig, which is what I really wanted, though it took 14 years to land it. My wife works for one of the associate deans of one of the colleges at UT, and she deals with academes all day. I’m so glad I didn’t become one.

I think the best part of this is he does his whole experiment based on the assumption that the plane is staying at a constant altitude. Even though he never confirmed this with the pilot, and doesn’t have an altimeter.

Ignoring all fallacies in his argument, travelling 203 miles over the 25,000ish mile circumference of the Earth would result in a % change of .00812 which is about .03 degrees (out of 360). Can he see a .03 degree change on a bubble level with his eyes?
